Matika Wilbur was born in Washington State in 1984 and a member of the Tulalip and Swinomish tribe. She is the creator of Project 562- a journey to photograph members of all 562 federally recognized tribes in the United States (566 as of 2016). The series makes Americans aware of the diversity of its indigenous communities. Wilbur aims to dispel stereotypical inaccuracies of Native Americans and to start conversations about the revitalization of historical cultures.
Wilbur was inspired to begin her work on Project 562 to address the misrepresentation of Native Americans in American culture. Wilbur's project evolved to include the social injustice and resulting political and economic hardship she discovered throughout her travels to native communities.
